Hitting in Competition and Getting the Scores She Needs
Competition season is a wild ride, isn’t it? One minute, your gymnast is nailing routines in practice, and the next, she’s struggling to pull it all together on meet day. It’s exciting, stressful, and everything in between—for both gymnasts and parents. Early in the season, it’s common for gymnasts to feel like they’re stuck, performing beautifully at practice but freezing up when it counts. So, what’s really going on, and how can you help her hit when it matters most?
Why Gymnasts Freeze in Competition
Let’s start with the big one: pressure. Gymnasts often put so much pressure on themselves to perform perfectly. Whether it’s trying to impress coaches, make you proud, or prove to themselves that all the hours they’ve spent training weren’t wasted, the weight of those expectations can feel crushing.
And when that pressure builds up? Cue the performance anxiety. It shows up as mental blocks during practice or nerves that cause mistakes in competition.
Take Katie, for example. She’s a Level 10 gymnast who had the skills to crush her beam routine but would freeze when it was go-time. “I was so focused on what would happen if I messed up that I couldn’t think about actually performing,” she shared. Sound familiar? Anxiety like that is super common—especially as gymnasts get older and start tying their self-worth to their results.
How Self-Worth Ties Into It All
Here’s the tough part: when gymnasts believe their value depends on their scores, the stakes feel impossibly high. The fear of failing can feel unbearable. And unfortunately, the more they fear failing, the more it becomes their focus. Instead of concentrating on their skills or technique, they’re stuck thinking about not messing up.
You can guess what happens next—it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. They make mistakes, feel even worse, and the cycle of stress and disappointment repeats.
One of the most important things we teach in our free guide, Compete with Confidence, is that a gymnast’s performance doesn’t define her worth. Mistakes—even falls—are part of the journey. (Yes, even for Olympic-level gymnasts!) When gymnasts let go of the idea that their scores determine their value, they can stop stressing so much and start focusing on what they actually can control: their gymnastics. That’s when the magic happens.
Building Mental Resilience
Here’s the truth: competition season isn’t just about perfect routines; it’s about resilience. It’s about learning how to recover when things don’t go as planned and growing from those experiences.
Sydney’s story shows how important this mindset shift can be. She had all the top skills in practice but struggled to hit when it mattered. Why? She was carrying the weight of feeling like she had to impress recruiters.
But once she realized her worth wasn’t tied to her scores, things started to click. She learned to trust herself, let go of that fear, and compete with confidence. And guess what? Her scores improved, and so did her belief in herself. And she is now is headed to the University of Maryland to be a Terrapin.
Why Mental Prep Matters
The way gymnasts prepare for meets—mentally and physically—makes a huge difference. Visualization, for example, is such a game-changer. When gymnasts take time to picture themselves nailing routines in their mind, it helps them build confidence and feel ready. It turns that pre-meet anxiety into excitement.
How You Can Support Her
Parents and coaches play such an important role in all this. Your gymnast doesn’t need you to tiptoe around her nerves or pretend the pressure isn’t there—she needs your help to manage it.
One parent shared, “I used to walk on eggshells around my daughter before meets, but I learned she needed me to help her manage her emotions, not avoid them.” That kind of support can make all the difference. Encouraging her to talk about what she’s feeling, reminding her that mistakes are normal, and cheering her on no matter what—these little things create a much safer mental space for her to perform.
But even more than that, is to give her the training and the tools she needs to manage her stress and the pressure she puts on herself. Just like she trains her body for competitions, she has to train her brain as well. We can help her do that.
The Bottom Line
Helping your gymnast hit in competition and get the scores she’s worked so hard for isn’t just about training harder. It’s about building her mental game, too. When she learns to let go of the fear of failure, bounce back from mistakes, and see her worth beyond her performance, she’ll unlock a whole new level of confidence.
And as a parent, you can play such a big part in helping her get there. It’s not easy, but with the right tools and support, it’s absolutely possible.
